PLANE TALK
Harmony Airways
is ending its scheduled flight service and
restructuring. The airline's flights to
Toronto ended March 30 and its other
scheduled flights will end April 9. The
airline, which has three planes, will
provide full refunds to anyone already
booked. The airline reported that increasing
operating costs, overcapacity in the market
and aggressive price competition from larger
carriers prompted the move.
WestJet
has commented on Harmony Airways’
announcement to suspend scheduled operations
by saying it will accommodate guests by
extending its existing seat sales to
Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii, as well as Las
Vegas, Nevada. Fares are subject to
availability and WestJet will assess whether
to extend these fares on a day-to-day basis.
US Airways Group,
Inc. reports it has completed a US$1.6
billion debt refinancing transaction. This
gives the airline the relief needed to meet
their primary objectives.
THIS IS NO JOKE
- For trans-Atlantic or
trans-Pacific travel, Northwest will
accept one of the following as the
first piece of checked luggage at no
charge when it is within the free
weight allowance: One rifle case
containing no more than four
rifles/shotguns, one shooting mat,
and one noise suppressor and tools.
Two rifle cases containing a
combined maximum total of four
rifles/shotguns will be considered
one piece of luggage. One pistol
case containing no more than five
handguns, one scope, one noise
suppressor and tools.
THIS COULD BE A JOKE
Rabies runs rampant, the air is so
cold it can damage your lungs and
drivers blast through red lights
with such frequency that it's a
"serious concern." Government
websites from the United States,
United Kingdom and Australia are
issuing online advice to travelers
that offer a somewhat skewed picture
of Canada. The U.S. Department of
State, in an online consular
information sheet, refers to Canada
as a highly developed nation, but
goes on to warn of ice and snow
creating hazardous driving
conditions and says rapid
lane-changing without signaling, and
tailgating are common. It also
cautions "drivers should be aware
that the frequency with which
motorists run red lights is a
serious concern throughout Canada."
In the U.K., the Foreign and
Commonwealth office warns its
residents to cover their mouths to
protect their lungs in extremely
cold weather and describes the
Interior of B.C. as a tornado zone.
The website also says rabies is a
problem in most of Canada.
Changing Rates
- It's getting more difficult for
business travelers to find the best
car rental rate. Using computer
programs to monitor competitors'
prices, as well as supply and
demand, auto rental companies are
more frequently changing prices,
particularly at airports. Prices can
change many times during a day. They
can rise 50% or more, or drop at
least 20%, within 24 hours. It's a
practice that's becoming
increasingly common in the rental
car industry, and one not widely
known even among experienced
travelers. Competitors' prices are
more transparent, and adjustments
are needed to remain competitive.

restrictions may apply.
