How
Times Have Changed!
The cover of the June
issue of Smart Money magazine, the
magazine of The Wall Street Journal,
features an article headlines
"Forget
Online, Travel Agents Get Better
Deals."
The article goes on
to compare how today's agents are
getting clients better deals and
helping them find rooms even when
many online travel websites show
sold-out. It's another indicator of
how the tide has shifted in favour
of travel agents and their services.
It wasn't all that long ago that an
editorial from this same magazine
headlined "Ten Things Your Travel
Agent Won't Tell
You." From reading
that particular article, you'd think
that traditional agents were crooks,
liars and completely incompetent.
So it's interesting
to see how times have changed. This
time around Smart Money actually
touts travel agents in its "Smart
Spending" area of the magazine.
Indeed, agents are adept at not only
saving their clients' money, but
also in getting value-added extras
that are not available to consumers
directly.
Mishandled baggage
costs the global air
transport industry over $ 2.5
billion annually, and that figure
could double by next year, warns an
American technology expert. Current
baggage handling systems use
barcodes to track luggage, but
damaged, misread or lost barcode
tags are the cause of the majority
of lost luggage.
Hotels, airlines at
opposite ends of US customer
satisfaction levels.
US hotel guest satisfaction has
reached record levels while airline
passengers are more disgruntled than
they have been in years. Overall,
Walt Disney World Resorts, JetBlue
Airways and Enterprise Rent-a-Car
ranked number one in hotel, airline
and rental car industry customer
satisfaction, respectively.
Both
Nolitours and Transat Holidays
have introduced a varied selection
of popular holiday choices
throughout Cuba and the Dominican
Republic where the single supplement
has been waived for the summer.
